Clinical Supervision for Licensure

If you are a mental health professional working toward your professional license, this page is for you. I am a Clinical Supervisor for mental health professionals who are working toward LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) licensure in Oregon and who are registered as Counselor Associates with the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists (OBLPCT).

I use a developmental and growth-oriented approach to supervision, with the goal of helping you become an independent clinical mental health professional through supporting the development of your individual therapeutic orientation, style, professional identity, competence and mastery.

My role as a supervisor can include teaching, evaluating, supporting, challenging, consulting, and to a limited extent, counseling, as it relates to your professional development. Throughout the supervisory relationship, I will help you develop your skills in the following areas:

  • Screening, evaluation and assessment
  • Case conceptualization
  • Treatment planning
  • Creating effective therapeutic relationships
  • Counseling skills and therapeutic interventions
  • Theory and applied knowledge
  • Client education
  • Practice-related laws and ethics
  • Professional standards and best practices
  • Charting and record-keeping
  • Professional identity development
  • Personal growth, insight and self-awareness

My supervisory style is structured yet collaborative and supportive. I will encourage you to be very proactive in your learning and in your use of our supervision sessions, and to take ownership of your professional development process. At the same time, I pay close attention to your progress toward benchmarks in each of the areas listed above, and when necessary I’ll direct our focus and work toward those areas where you are experiencing challenges, vulnerabilities or blind spots.

Please note – My clinical supervisory approach is best suited for pre-licensed professionals who have some previous professional experience in a mental health setting or in a medical or human services field, and/or who have developed a baseline of personal maturity.

If you are a recent graduate with minimal clinical experience or professional exposure, I strongly recommend that you seek a position with a mental health agency or other service organization where you can receive the professional experience and clinical exposure that you will need in order to learn to practice safely and sustainably in an independent practice.
